This piece was inspired by the bewitching and bewildering work of Amei Zhao, aka seventypercentethanol, who consistently blows my mind here on Tumblr.
I was so happy to read this, even Bryan Konietzko is inspired by Amei!!!

GV: And then Bryan would say these crazy things like, “On this shot I want you to use a wide angle lens.”
BK:I just wanted it to be cinematic, and have space, and depth, and atmosphere. And you would see that in a lot of anime, the stuff that we really connected with. Just this incredible observation of the real world. Even if it was this fantasy thing, it was very filmic. There was lens differences, in what lenses they were drawing.
GV: Whaddya mean lens.. Like I’m… This is pencil on paper… I don’t… *laughs* I don’t have a lens here!
But he was going for this look. And I had to learn all that stuff. When you’re fresh out of a sitcom type show, and you have a deadline, and you’re trying to draw these Kung Fu scenes with a wide angle lens, that’s crazy! They didn’t prepare me for that in art school.
I learned so much about making a TV series from my time working with Mike and Bryan on Avatar The Last Airbender.
