This is a good blog and I’d say you should follow them however I reblog a lot of their stuff… Alright follow them.
Hello and thank you! C:
I’m just going to throw some links to tutorials here at you because it’s easier than explaining on my own, haha.
Unique Features pt 1 (body types)
Unique Features pt 2 (female faces)
Unique Features pt 3 (male faces)Female Body Tutorial (note that the same can be applied to male characters with a few modifications - e.g. the bust/waist/hips/thighs can be modified to shoulders/chest (ribcage)/thighs for male characters, and can be expanded to include neck, shoulders, arms (both upper and lower), and calves for both sexes - all can have varying sizes in any given character, which is what creates a unique silhouette)
Guide to Human Types pt 1 (Asian)
Guide to Human Types pt 2 (Caucasian)
Guide to Human Types pt 3 (African and Pacific Islands)
Guide to Human Types addendumSkin: A Chart (note that this is a supplement to a tutorial on how to paint skin, linked in the description to the image)
Younger vs. Older features (a non-realism view on how to make characters look younger by reducing facial detail - not applicable to all styles and character designs but it can be a helpful thing to keep in mind)
Guide to Aging Characters…I get the feeling I’m forgetting to link something (and for the life of me I couldn’t find anything good on how to draw fatter characters), but there’s the basics I can remember.

HOLY FREE ART PROGRAMS BATMAN
I’ve had this list sitting around for a while (in case I ever want to try something new) and I thought I’d share it, because why the hell not, everybody loves free stuff. I’ve only used a couple, so for all I know these could be complete shit. BUT YOU NEVER KNOW, RIGHT?
*= available for both windows and mac os
GIMP * - Does a lot of the same stuff as Photoshop.
FireAlpaca * - Similar to Paint Tool Sai, so it’s a good alternative for Mac users.
Autodesk Sketchbook Copic Edition * - Simulates the look of copic markers.
MyPaint * - Basic stuff, nothing fancy.
Pinta * - Drawing program modeled after paint.NET.
Inkscape * - Vector/drawing program meant to be similar to Illustrator.
ArtRage * - Digital painting program; you can get the trimmed down version for free or buy the full version with more features.
Sumo Paint * - In-browser drawing app.
DAZ Studio * - Some sort of 3D model poser thing.
Pencil * - Software for animating.
SketchUp * - Tool for making 3D models. Looks handy for stuff like architectural drawings.
Blender * - Pretty popular 3D software.
escape motions * - Some browser apps, fun to fiddle with when you’re bored (the fluid fire simulation is pretty cool imo).
Twistedbrush (Pixarra) - Seems to be meant for replicating the look of traditional media.
Pixia/Phierha - A popular program in Japan, according to the website.
Krita - This was originally made for Linux and it looks like the developers haven’t ironed out all of the kinks in the Windows installer.
Artweaver - Another trimmed down free thing if you don’t want to buy the full program.
paint.NET - Pretty basic kit, probably good for simple stuff.
Project Dogwaffle - I’m not sure what this one is all about because I couldn’t stop laughing at the terrible website.
Speedy Painter - Lightweight digital painting program.
mtPaint - Originally made for pixel art; simple enough to run on older computers.
Chasys Draw IES - Supposed to be some sort of drawing+image editor thing.
PaintRibbon - Seems to be another plain old basic image editor.
DrawPlus - Looks like it’s made for graphic design and vector stuff.
SmoothDraw - I’m guessing this is a basic thing for people who don’t want to bother with complicated stuff.
(I hope it’s alright I post this, I just found it on google. uwu)
http://fuckyeaharttutorials.tumblr.com/ - A great general resource. My references are all things that are useful for me, and are fairly simplistic and easy to follow but, there’s a lot more compiled over here

/There is edit in the free-ware -section 24/8/2012/
I just went back through over 900 liked posts and dug out all the art tutorials so i can keep track of them. I guess this might be helpful to some of you guys, so here you go.
Here we go then!
Freeware
Alchemy - this is a really fun program. You play around making abstract shapes until you start to see something in them, kind of like a Rorschach test. Then you use the shapes as a base to draw it from.
MyPaint - a pretty decent painting program that also has the benefit of working on Unix systems.
openCanvas 1.1 - I haven’t used openCanvas in years but it was a nice program with a pretty unique feel to it.
ArtRage - Only used this a couple of times donkey’s years ago just before I got oC, but I’ve heard good things about it.
The GIMP - In a similar vein to Photoshop, but free. I couldn’t get on with it when I tried it out a few years ago, but it’s pretty popular and is available on Unix systems and Macs.Sketchbook copic: a bit different program
Easytoon: Easy tool to make black and white animations. (Download not tested - be careful if you choose to download! Here is another download option for the program) - TUTORIALS FOR THE PROGRAM
Not-free-ware
Photoshop - Standard painting fare. Probably the most flexible program (particularly the latest versions) but not designed to act in a “natural” way. If you’ve used it for painting versus something like Painter you know what I mean. Who the fuck pays for it though? Google “Photoshop tumblr masterpost” and take your pick.
Paint Tool Sai - Far more affordable and definitely worth paying for if you can. The brushes are very decent (especially when they’ve been tweaked a little), the gui is simple and intuitive, and I dare you to find a program with which making smooth lineart is easier.
Corel Painter - My program of choice for most things. More tools than you could ever possibly use and pretty cheap on a student license, providing that you can prove you’re a student! It’s got a few bugs but if you want realism or a more natural feel than PS or SAI this is the program for you.Anatomy
